erwan sene lives and works in paris and runs the label cellar door service. last fall, his ep "i heard you laughing" appeared on jules peter's unknown precept imprint.
the savage weekend curator and hot releases label-owner ryan martin creates two mixes full of downer-folk, weird electronica and romantic post wave stuff. for upcomig music by russian tsarlag, housefire or patrick gallagher check:
during last years ctm/transmediale festival i met cera khin, berlin based artist and selector with tunisian roots, in a breezy-cold passage in front of the hardwax record store. we went for a small walk through the area and later sat down in a shady bar where we had an inspiring talk about her lazy tapes label, weird horror movies and lots of other random stuff we both liked. i asked cera if she would like to play at our rhizom festival in zurich that spring, an alternative music festival i was intensely involved in back then.
end of the year favorites featuring: ambienti coassiali, cabaret du ciel, catherine christer hennix, cera khin & christoph de babalon, computing machinery, cs + kreme, delroy edwards & dean blunt, eszaid, gray chalk, hybride sentimento, indifference dance centre, infoline, ingus baušķenieks, lena willikens & sarah szczesny, michele mercure, o yuki conjugate, persona service, shelter, special occasion, teresa winter, thomas bush …
i remember this one cold october day in zurich. back then, i used to live in this spacious four room apartment in the middle of the city, which had a very modest interior, a guest-bed and an lo-fi stereo unit. my two french guests from paris, louis vial and cyrus goberville from collapsing market, didn’t need more to feel safe…
since the early 80s, there has been a distinguished experimental and diy scene in milan. the black sweat records label, which was created in 2012 by davide domenichini, a.k.a. dome, can be understood as a continuation of that tradition. besides publishing outstanding re-issues of local and international line-ups, the label is bringing out new artists. the influence of their mentors—the italian pioneers of that era—is loud and clear.
our favourite music institution rvng intl. from brooklyn has recently published a compilation with songs by mark renner who originates from baltimore. all of the pieces were developed between 1982 and 1990. rvng boss matt werth has discovered renners album „all walks of this life“ at a fleamarket and he was immediately excited about hearing more of this music. one could not overhear the influence of bands like ultravox, felt or the yellow magic orchestra. the latest compilation also hosts instrumental pieces that renner composed exclusively for an exhibition of paintings. today mark is active as an artist, musician and filmmaker. we‘ve asked him about his recent work, his inspiration and his future plans.
collapsing market is all about bringing romantism back into a technocratic world dominated by industrial and monetary symbols. cyrus goberville & louis vial, the two brains behind the excellent parisian label, curated some exclusive playlists for us. recently, a lost work by iranian composer morteza hannaneh surfaced – until now it had only existed on a tape of a radio teheran session. the release is more of a peripheral phenomenon, but it still reflects the idiosyncratic aesthetics of the contemporary label.
entire volumes could be written about the output of the label vinyl on demand. the roughly 150 re-releases of obscure, long-forgotten material—mostly located somewhere between experimental, minimal, and early-80s noise—each has its own story. here a mere two of our favorites briefly are introduced.
ikebana is the japanese art of flower arranging. the arrangements are designed to bring nature into living spaces while at the same time representing the cosmic order. in a project inspired by this art form, musicians and djs bring together their favorite records. last year, the series was available as a limited poster with a download code. among the featured artists were lyria (stopmakingsense), lexx (phantom island), and morgan cuinet (hands in the dark).
the london-based foom imprint reissued a hidden classic with unheard versions from the sublime condo title.
our friends from the hamburg-berlin-based label sky walking published sollmann and gürtler's "gegen die zeit" improvisation. On september 11th, 2015 the audience of the stunning “rotor” concert series witnessed the first live appearance of john Gürtler and phillip sollmann underneath a highway bridge in offenbach, germany.
after the stunning release «five rhythm works» in 2016, the japanese label em records issued a mini-compilation containing three from scratch interpretations by japanese group goat, berlin based don’t dj and japanese utena kobayashi group.
if you're interested in electro-acoustic and obscure sounds you should consider paying a visit to oor records in zurich and ask for anna frei. anna, one of seven enthusiasts running this very specialized place, is definitely the right person to guide you. talking ain't your thing? then look out for her alias fred hystère and let her stunning polyrhythmic dj sets do the talking. either way it's already an adventurous journey to read anna’s liner notes about her current favorites.
europe by night is the gripping and intoxicating debut album by stockholm, sweden based metro riders (real name henrik stelzer) and the first release on newly minted contemporary global imprint possible motive. employing outdated software and now obsolete analogue recording equipment, metro riders conjures a suspenseful and gloomy, true to the era re-imagining of lost sounds.
"grandi successi" is a project by angelo sindaco and maurizio carli moretti with guests like raime drummer valentina magaletti, soft moon matteo vallicelli, impro-avant combo starfuckers, jonathan clancy (singer with his clancyness) plus contemporary artist claudio corsello and writer-performer emidio clementi.
into the light brings out a splendid assemblage of 17 tracks of mostly previously unheard material by athens based composer akis daoutis (akis) most of them recorded in his hometown and in usa where he was studying in the mid-eighties.
tonight will be fine is a band project by abdeslam hammouda and julius steinhoff. their debut lp „elephant island“ which was released on toshiya kawasaki's mule musiq, is a uncanny journey to some mysterious and lonesome places. while working on their second album, abdeslam & julius created a podcast for fromheretillnow called „nyc travel diaries“. the mix drifts away from the sandbank and berth straight into the frantic harbor of new york. the gaps are filled with field recordings of city street scenes, airports around the world, trippy trainrides through the netherlands and many other sound companions collected along the way. all songs are written and produced by abdeslam & julius, played with various acoustic instruments, percussions, bells and chimes.
great work by the french collectors dj sundae (who run the brilliant idle press & hollie imprints) and julien dechery. a deep sentimental journey into obscure folk and art pop. rereleased by noise in my head offshoot efficient space. sky girl is also represented in our end of the affair: favorites 2016 list.
sweet post-punk, with a heartfelt reggae/funk influence, analog dub effects and lovely femme-vox. a unique slice of late-70s/early-80s goodness, starring brenda ray, whose previous release on em records, walatta, has been embraced by a large number of listeners. recorded in north west england, d'ya hear me! is warm-hearted, open, fresh and slyly experimental.
our video mixtape for the swiss-based print magazine zweikommasieben. a meteroit strikes and transforms the world into a surreal place. gigantic windmills collapse. everything works. a journey into unknown corners. featuring music by a new line (related), jan jelinek & masayoshi fujita, hanno leichtmann, filthy huns, 1991, sun circles, bitchin bajas, slow attack ensamble, yves tumor, christoph de babalon. don't sleep...dream!

hello! well, first i’d like to express my absolute enthusiasm for your lovely work. i have rarely encountered a label with such a individual and innovative spirit. it will be a particular pleasure to find out a bit more about the architecture of jj funhouse. please introduce yourselves briefly…
no more dreams is the latest release from the gothenburg-based artist axel backman better known as 1991. backman released two lo-fi electronica albums back in 2012. high-tech high-life on opal tapes is a tasty new-age synthesizer soundscape lp with arpeggio textures and shimmering drones—the prefect soundtrack for the cold winter days. the other, 1991 (astro:dynamics), features idm-inspired sounds oscillating with deep, dark ambient structures and devious melodies. we are very excited about backman's next plans. it seems that his newly founded label nmd is just the beginning.
after releasing their own debut record in 2014 the hamburg based group sky walking formed by peter kersten, christian naujoks and richard von der schulenburg now celebrates the launch of their self-titled label. by bringing together an international line-up of artists mostly associated with the new and experimental music scenes in cities like hamburg, berlin and new york, sky walking not only establishes a link between different locations and their specific (local) scenes – with the golden pudel club in hamburg somehow functioning as a bermuda triangle – but also between different generations of artists from these scenes.
sometimes, a mixtape is not just a collection of contiguous songs. (ex) solar bears member john kowalski touches us again under his alchimie moniker with a selection of deeper meanings and listening pleasures—very personal, incredibly true…
tired of reading reviews? then listen up: norin, front man and founder of lust for youth, responsible for two mind-blowing eps on the danish imprint posh isolation, shares with us the sources of inspiration for his new collapsing market release. no more questions asked!
