"gigi masin, born in venice, italy on 24th october 1955, has been part of the music scene since the early 70’s and a radio dj with the most important radio stations. from 1978 he has been establishing a collaboration with poet/writer massimo palladino, a venture that had been permitting to carry out many and wonderefull pieces for theatre, television, radio broadcasting, where music and voice walk hand in hand, challenging and provoking themselves as well. sounds, tapes, turntables, live electronics are the ground where scene music moves."
antico adagio was originally intended to be a double album, but was eventually scaled back to a single disc, and this is the unreleased albumfrom the 1978 session. before an aberrant idea of progress and workaholic ethic ludicrously sped up our daily lives, even in the hectic city of milan it was possible to “play slowly” – with no pressure, simply following the path your art was showing you.
it was 1977, the year when punk rock exploded in the face of disco-music, but some thinking heads in italy managed to escape the set trends of the year and walk a totally different path. pioneers like franco battiato had already been experimenting with a crash of rock and electroacoustic music since the beginning of the decade, and others like roberto cacciapaglia or riccardo zappa would explore farther in those lands, mixing acoustic instruments with the bourgeoning synth technology.
the group was based in a farm near florence, and had a krautrock-like attitude that leaves them as a unique band in the italian prog field. mainly an electronic band, based on keyboards and with very little use of voice, they released no less than three albums in 1974, one of them only intended for promotional use, and all based on instrumental-only themes in the same style as many german bands of the cosmic couriers genre.
